I was born in San German, Puerto Rico to Guyanese parents, and raised in Seattle, Washington from the age of 6 years. My upbringing was enriched by both Caribbean and African American culture.
The passion for baking started at a young age, while living in Guyana, in a village called Courtland, where I watched my paternal Grandmother who was the village baker make a variety of breads and pastries. I didn’t pursue the art of baking until later on in life.
I was influenced by the following women: my lovely Mother who guided me on my first cake; my Aunty Verena (Gallo) who gave me numerous tips , that I guarantee will not be found in any cookbook; my Aunty Leslyn who also offered my first lesson on pastry making, and my Aunty Brenda who also offered tips on her delicious pastries ( my favorite- Pine tarts).
The first time having Peach Cobbler was at the Buchanan cookout, nearly 35yrs. ago! The patriarch of the Buchanan family Mr. James Buchanan created this DELICIOUS dessert.
With the influence of the late Mr. James Buchanan; the urging of his son, my late dear friend Joseph Buchanan; and the remembrance of my dear father Charles “Benji” Benjamin- Benj’s Peach Cobbler & Sweets was born.
